TownhallNaija congratulates Nigerians on Naija@60. Even though from popular opinion, such congratulatory message seems more like a mockery considering the mood of Nigerians at this Independence, we celebrate the Naija spirit! The spirit of resilience and hard work. This has kept especially the #NaijaYouths going. Yes, Nigerians have never been this dissatisfied, disgruntled and felt so let down by a country they have so much expectations of.
Few days running up to the Naija@60 independence celebration, all over the social media, you would find satirist comments pointing to how dissatisfied a people especially the young people of Naija are. No wonder then, they have decided and united with a common front to change the narrative starting with the #endSARS protest that emerged just after the Independence Day ‘celebration’. This is unprecedent and we congratulate the #NaijaYouth on this great effort towards ending police brutality and demanding for good governance.
It is a very sad reality that successive political leadership right from 1960 has either not done enough or failed terribly in putting Naija on the right pedestal for growth and prosperity for all. Worst still, Nigerians have been intimidated into silence, alienated from governance, etc.
The very structure for participatory democracy has been weaken and almost destroyed. Nigerians hardly know who their representatives are- whether at the local councils or state assemblies or national assembly. They don’t even see why they should bother! Meanwhile, these guys make laws, take decisions that directly affect everyone including our born and unborn children.
Governance is too big and a serious business to be left to a selected few. Our socioeconomic and political wellbeing is too critical aspect of our lives to be left to those representing us whether at the local government, state or federal. There is dire need to #getInvolved- #knowYourReps, find out what they are doing, ask critical questions, demand for accountability.
Police brutality and Impunity is just one offshoot of the deficit in quality representation and the lack of strong engagement between representatives and constituencies they represent. It’s time to speak out/up for change (“Soro soke”) and the #TownhallNaija is here as your enabler!
The TownhallNaija is a non-partisan interactive digital platform for citizens-representatives’ engagements. It is inspired to deepen quality representation (of constituents) and to re-engineer social change!
At TownhallNaija we believe firmly that the following reforms MUST be undertaken to achieve a Nigeria that works for ALL:
- Police Reform #EndSARS #endPoliceBrutality
- #endSenate and #AxeNASSWageBill
- Constitution Review including devolution of powers to states
- True Federalism
- Prioritize Education, Research and Development
- And your own…..
Arise O’Compatriots! God bless Naija!
